WHILE INDIV WAS ON THE GROUND HELPING WOUNDED PERSONNEL INTO ACFT. DURING ACTION IT WAS BELIEVED THAT INDIV HAD
BOARDED THE ACFT AND ACFT DPT AREA. INDIV WAS LAST SEEN ON THE GROUND UNINJURED AND ARMED. DEATH IS THE RESULT OF
HOSTILE ACTION.

57TH MED DET (NA) VIETNAM
Died 1 April 1965 in Vietnam as the result of a head wound. He was crew chief on a UH-1B military helicopter on medical evacuation flight. Aircraft landed to pick up wounded personnel and while he was helping wounded personnel into aircraft, landing zone came under intense hostile fire.
The following hand written note, entitled "Memo for Record,"
transcribes a conversation someone had with the Army Records Center in St. Louis,
Missouri, on June 16, 1965.

Subject: Clarification of Medals
Decedent was awarded The Purple Heart for wounds in Action on 31 January 1965. He received the Purple Heart for being Killed in Action 1 April 1965--, The Silver Star, The Bronze Star
Medal with V device and the Air Medal with 1 thru 6 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Army Commendation Medal. Per Mrs. Stevens.
