While the town of Webster, Massachusetts falls outside the scope of this project,
it is difficult to ignore its inextricable links to Dudley, as described in the following letter:

Webster and Dudley are separated by the French River, but for years did
many things jointly. Webster was always more commercially developed and
had the larger population, so when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s
Dudley kids attended the parochial schools in Webster and went to
Bartlett High School, also in Webster, since Dudley had no high school at
that time. Most of the Dudley folks even attended church in Webster.
That is why Bubbles went to school, and church in Webster.

When Dudley lost a son Webster did also. The ties amongst the towns were
that close back then and maybe still are. I don't know since I haven't
lived there in years. If you look at the VN casualties for Webster you
will see there were quite a few for a town that small. Fortunately most
of us survived and came back to our families.

USMC Lance Cpl. James P. Mason puts his canteen to the lips of a comrade wounded in battle. Their unit,1st Battalion, 26th Regiment, B Co., Fifth Division had just finished an engagement with North Vietnamese regulars south of the demilitarized zone between North and South Vietnam. Mason, 20, of Webster was a three-sports star athlete at Bartlett High School, graduating in 1964. This is an Associated Press photo that was published in the New York Times, the Daily News, Worcester Telegram and Gazette and many other newspapers throughout the country in October 1966. Sgt. Mason was discharged in August 1967 and lives in Webster.
