While the town of Webster, Massachusetts falls outside the scope of this
project, Webster and Dudley are separated by the
French River, but for years did
USMC Lance Cpl. James P. Mason puts his canteen to the
lips of a comrade wounded in battle. Their unit,1st Battalion, 26th Regiment,
B Co., Fifth Division had just finished an engagement with North Vietnamese
regulars south of the demilitarized zone between North and South Vietnam.
Mason, 20, of Webster was a three-sports star athlete at Bartlett High School,
graduating in 1964. This is an Associated Press photo that was published in
the New York Times, the Daily News, Worcester Telegram and Gazette and many
other newspapers throughout the country in October 1966. Sgt. Mason was
discharged in August 1967 and lives in Webster.
